Overview of Hospital: Montefiore Medical Center, named to honor Sir Moses Montefiore, a famed philanthropist of the time, was founded in 1884 by leaders of New York’s Jewish community. Today, the Montefiore Medical Group (MMG) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the nation comprised of three main divisions -- Weiler, Moses, and North -- located in the north Bronx, as well as many other locations throughout the Bronx and lower Westchester County.
Since 1963 Montefiore has served as the university hospital and academic medical center for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. Montefiore has been an innovator and leader in the medical community. The Montefiore Medical Center was among the first to offer social services, home health care and social medicine to patients.
Montefiore contributed key research on the transmission of the AIDS disease during the 1980s. The Medical Center's advances with minimally invasive surgery highlight their innovation and dedication to promote greater patient safety and faster healing.
The 726-bed Henry and Lucy Moses Division hospital facility is located in the Norwood section of the Bronx, directly south of the Westchester County border. Providing a full range of patient services as well as a major teaching and research facility, the Moses Division was the original Montefiore Hospital.
The Moses Division includes the new Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) which U.S. News & World Report has ranked as one of the nation's top pediatric specialty hospitals for the second year in a row.
